I read this entire series cover to cover in about a week.
My father left when I was 4 and for a decent portion of my childhood, I was raised by a single mother with 2 jobs raising 3 children in a shoebox apartment. She eventually married a wonderful man and I was taught by both my mother and my stepfather to believe women are strong and independent.
BELLA's character peeves me for one reason and one reason only: she has NO backbone. She meets this Edward guy, and suddenly he is her entire world and source of happiness. When he leaves her, Bella has no life of her own and no will to truly live. NO GIRL - or boy for that matter - SHOULD EVER THINK THAT THIS BEHAVIOR IS OKAY. EDWARD IS A MANIPULATIVE AND CONTROLLING BOYFRIEND AND BELLA IS A SUBMISSIVE PATHETIC EXCUSE FOR A FEMALE. Don't even get me started on the obsessive werewolf with anger management issues....

Why don't you all send your messages to Stephanie Meyer? She'd be glad to hear them I'm sure. Maybe she'll even stop writing. Or maybe not. Again, just so you know at the start of a sentence the first letter of the first word needs to be capitilized. Also vamp, in the sense you are using it (as in a short-form for vampire), is incorrect you meant to use vampire, and "btw" is not a word, it is however a shortform for "by the way". Just so you know.

I liked the books, and can see where cassandra is coming from in analyzing the books. However I like the fantasy which is the motivation for me picking up a fiction book to read:)
I did not like the first movie and haven't cared to try and see the others. Honestly it is because while finishing the last of the twilight series a client of mine said oh if you liked those hehehe you need to read THESE and gave me a series to read called The Black Dagger Brotherhood Series by JR Ward. And Cassandra honey if you thought twilight was dark, sick etc then don't even bother. Those of you who thought twilight was good and liked the dark, lol 'sick' romance, then you will LOVE this series! They are the grown up version of twilight, for example twilight is in the teeney bobber section while, Black dagger is in the adult section must show ID:) I've told people and told people, but these die hard twilight fans just won't even consider reading any others, I did have one woman who got them and called me a couple of days later wanting to know if I had the next in the series she just couldn't wait to read it! :) I also like anne rices' vampire series in all I believe there were 15 more if you include the mayfair witch series which she ties into the vampires in the last of the books.
anyway to each their own

I actually enjoyed the series up until the last book. Everyone started bashing on the Twilight saga once those damn movie versions were made. The movies gained popular somehow, looks like terrible casting to me. Once popularity soared people started hating the movies (which suck anyways) and then turned their hatred to the books(which honestly aren't that bad).

No. We always hated the books. I refuse to read the work of someone who calls themself an author and yet apparently thinks they are above the rules of grammar. You know, that thing you learn in, I don't know, middle school? In all seriousness, my 8th grade brother (who failed English twice this year and passed with a D twice) read a few paragraphs of her book and immediately asked me if she had ever heard of grammar.
Also, I refuse to read the work of a hypocrite. I've read the first 3 books. Like Kesha, Meyer tells her readers that her books were made to empower women.
Empower women my ass. All it teaches anyone is that
1. All men must worship the ground they walk on for no apparent reason.
2. They should allow their significant other to have total control over their lives, including, but not limited to, not allowing them to see their friends.
3. If you don't have a boyfriend, get one.
4. You cannot be happy with your friends. Only your boyfriend.
Ms. Meyer DEMEANS the female gender to no end. I'm not a feminist, but that does not mean I want the next generation to think that their lives absolutely must be like that.
If people lived their lives according to Twilight, the human race would die out within the next 2 or 3 generations merely because no guy was the "perfect" Edward. Isn't that a little scary to think about?
The only entertaining thing about Twilight is watching Twats get mad when you insult it and Friggin Twilight (Youtube it).

Ok. I am a twilight basher. I hate Twilight and all the whiny teenage plots that it implies, but it's not just because of the trash writing, but because it sends a message that I do not agree with.
The whole powerful vampire shit is fine by me, even making a vampire in love with a human, that's fine.
But ending with a teenage girl who wants nothing more than her boyfriend to have sex with her and then suck her blood... what the hell is so romantic about that? Meyer is a commercial genius, she keeps the characters in constant contact without threatening the reader with the chance of sex.
I am a seventeen-year-old girl and I pride myself on being literate. People saying that the book will inspire teenagers to read more? Maybe, but not likely. The best you can hope for a child to actually become passionate is to wait until the child finds something to be passionate about. Reading Twilight is not going to influence kids to read because the ones who are reading it are already interested in reading. Kids today are far more fixated on TV and the movies than they are on words. Social networking has taken over, and twilight was only the bridge. The current craze is vampires, so people go make role playing blood-play websites. Is that really what you want your kid involved in?
Today the talk is blood sucking, which is somehow safe as long as with it's someone you love, but the truth is that it's sick, stephanie Meyer put shock value to romance, and it turned into a chemical success. It is far harder to write a true romance novel than a dark-romance novel. Think about her other novel, Host, which basically had the same plot as Twilight, with a human in love with a non-human ect. The girl is inadequate, thinks she is undeserving of love and so she turns to self-destruction in order to 'save' the one whom she loves.
The basis of that story is again dark-romance.
I'm not saying we should pull the book off the shelves, burn it, or for that matter, drive a stake through it. But kids need to understand realism, we have strayed too far from reality into fantasy. There is no real violence, and therefore no real danger. But the damage to our minds, the ideas that they spawn need to be understood, if parents actually read these books and explained the issue so that a kid can fully understand the appeal, then maybe we wouldn't have these useless arguments.
The truth is that we will read what we want to read, without truly understanding the meaning behind it.
There are some things in Meyer's novels that are just wrong, just plain wrong. You cannot hate a book on the basis of being a non-conformist, and you cannot hate it unconditionally on the basis of the writer's abilities. You can hate it only when you find something deeply wrong with the book. And I find many things very, deeply wrong with the book. So stephanie meyer, I applaud your sense of market strategy, but you are a sick, sick person for peddling it to the public.

It looks to me that the only reason(s) you despise the series so much is a) it's popular or b) the plot. If this had been any other unknown book I doubt you would have written this. You obviously hate the series based on the story line and that's perfectly understandable but it seems that the fact it's 'popular' bothers you. Things get popular all the time so my advice to you is to suck it up. If you want to speak about unsettling subject matters then speak about something more relevant than a young adults storybook; such as current global issues and such. I find that True Blood as a series is far worse, even Vampire Diaries follows the same line. I find that real life is far more disturbing than a tale about a girl and her vampire lover.
I would suggest spending your time on more important and lasting matters than fictional characters.

Its wild popularity is a huge part of the problem she's talking about, though. If someone writes despicable garbage that doesn't promote good values, and then no one reads it, who cares? It's just harmless, unseen words and pages, and is thus powerless.
On the other hand, if someone writes a book with poor themes (as many believe Twilight to have), and millions of people read it, you're now looking at a problem.
It's crazy to say the series isn't a "relevant" issue. The series has given millions of young and old readers a completely distorted idea of what a boyfriend or husband should be. Edward Cullen is an unrealistic character, and it's ridiculous to hope for someone to fit that mold. What if men who watch porn got the idea that their wife/girlfriend should be more like the women who star in it?

Look, sweetheart. You don't have to find something "deeply wrong" in order to hate it.
For example, I hate blueberries. Not because they're wrong in some way, but because the taste and texture make me gag.
I hate Twilight as much as the next person in here, but not because it's sick in any way, other than the fact that I find it sick to defile the name of vampires by making them sparkle. I hate it because it is a genuinely bad series. The characters are predictable and shallow, as is the plot. I greatly dislike Stephanie Meyer's writing style, but she has done an excellent job of marketing this garbage. On that point, I agree with you.

What's sad is, I just turned 17 about a week ago and I didn't find that post exceedingly literate at all... I applaud Cassandra for her post, because what she says is true, but I have to admit it's sad that there are people who can't "believe" that kids can be more intelligent than them.

It's something kids will hopefully grow out of, so don't put Twilight down and her writings aren't awful, cheesy sure but she is a fine writer. The issue with Twilight is the message it sends. Just one example of the message being that, when Edward leaves Bella in the second book, she repeatedly throws herself off a cliff, thinking it will bring him back to her. Which it does.

Harry Potter has plot. I read both of them and even now, I can enjoy reading Harry Potter. Rowling spend years working on the story, linking things together and I genuinely think she is a good writer. I legitimately think Meyer pulled Twilight out her backside. It would have been okay if she had developed the plot and not made Bella so pathetic. You are right though, regardless of our opinions, both of them are laughing on the way to the bank.

Sorry, how can you compare the two? Rowling's story is one that teaches great morals by creating a fantasy world in which we see reflected all the good and bad of the human condition. Twilight is a badly written novel for hormonal teenage girls who think being shiny is a whole new way to look at vampires.

I actually enjoyed the series up until the last book. Everyone started bashing on the Twilight saga once those damn movie versions were made. The movies gained popular somehow, looks like terrible casting to me. Once popularity soared people started hating the movies (which suck anyways) and then turned their hatred to the books(which honestly aren't that bad).
No. We always hated the books. I refuse to read the work of someone who calls themself an author and yet apparently thinks they are above the rules of grammar. You know, that thing you learn in, I don't know, middle school? In all seriousness, my 8th grade brother (who failed English twice this year and passed with a D twice) read a few paragraphs of her book and immediately asked me if she had ever heard of grammar.
Also, I refuse to read the work of a hypocrite. I've read the first 3 books. Like Kesha, Meyer tells her readers that her books were made to empower women.
Empower women my ass. All it teaches anyone is that
1. All men must worship the ground they walk on for no apparent reason.
2. They should allow their significant other to have total control over their lives, including, but not limited to, not allowing them to see their friends.
3. If you don't have a boyfriend, get one.
4. You cannot be happy with your friends. Only your boyfriend.
Ms. Meyer DEMEANS the female gender to no end. I'm not a feminist, but that does not mean I want the next generation to think that their lives absolutely must be like that.
If people lived their lives according to Twilight, the human race would die out within the next 2 or 3 generations merely because no guy was the "perfect" Edward. Isn't that a little scary to think about?

Ok. I am a twilight basher. I hate Twilight and all the whiny teenage plots that it implies, but it's not just because of the trash writing, but because it sends a message that I do not agree with.
The whole powerful vampire shit is fine by me, even making a vampire in love with a human, that's fine.
But ending with a teenage girl who wants nothing more than her boyfriend to have sex with her and then suck her blood... what the hell is so romantic about that? Meyer is a commercial genius, she keeps the characters in constant contact without threatening the reader with the chance of sex.
I am a seventeen-year-old girl and I pride myself on being literate. People saying that the book will inspire teenagers to read more? Maybe, but not likely. The best you can hope for a child to actually become passionate is to wait until the child finds something to be passionate about. Reading Twilight is not going to influence kids to read because the ones who are reading it are already interested in reading. Kids today are far more fixated on TV and the movies than they are on words. Social networking has taken over, and twilight was only the bridge. The current craze is vampires, so people go make role playing blood-play websites. Is that really what you want your kid involved in?
Today the talk is blood sucking, which is somehow safe as long as with it's someone you love, but the truth is that it's sick, stephanie Meyer put shock value to romance, and it turned into a chemical success. It is far harder to write a true romance novel than a dark-romance novel. Think about her other novel, Host, which basically had the same plot as Twilight, with a human in love with a non-human ect. The girl is inadequate, thinks she is undeserving of love and so she turns to self-destruction in order to 'save' the one whom she loves.
The basis of that story is again dark-romance.
I'm not saying we should pull the book off the shelves, burn it, or for that matter, drive a stake through it. But kids need to understand realism, we have strayed too far from reality into fantasy. There is no real violence, and therefore no real danger. But the damage to our minds, the ideas that they spawn need to be understood, if parents actually read these books and explained the issue so that a kid can fully understand the appeal, then maybe we wouldn't have these useless arguments.
The truth is that we will read what we want to read, without truly understanding the meaning behind it.
There are some things in Meyer's novels that are just wrong, just plain wrong. You cannot hate a book on the basis of being a non-conformist, and you cannot hate it unconditionally on the basis of the writer's abilities. You can hate it only when you find something deeply wrong with the book. And I find many things very, deeply wrong with the book. So stephanie meyer, I applaud your sense of market strategy, but you are a sick, sick person for peddling it to the public.
It looks to me that the only reason(s) you despise the series so much is a) it's popular or b) the plot. If this had been any other unknown book I doubt you would have written this. You obviously hate the series based on the story line and that's perfectly understandable but it seems that the fact it's 'popular' bothers you. Things get popular all the time so my advice to you is to suck it up. If you want to speak about unsettling subject matters then speak about something more relevant than a young adults storybook; such as current global issues and such. I find that True Blood as a series is far worse, even Vampire Diaries follows the same line. I find that real life is far more disturbing than a tale about a girl and her vampire lover.
I would suggest spending your time on more important and lasting matters than fictional characters.
Its wild popularity is a huge part of the problem she's talking about, though. If someone writes despicable garbage that doesn't promote good values, and then no one reads it, who cares? It's just harmless, unseen words and pages, and is thus powerless.
On the other hand, if someone writes a book with poor themes (as many believe Twilight to have), and millions of people read it, you're now looking at a problem.
It's crazy to say the series isn't a "relevant" issue. The series has given millions of young and old readers a completely distorted idea of what a boyfriend or husband should be. Edward Cullen is an unrealistic character, and it's ridiculous to hope for someone to fit that mold. What if men who watch porn got the idea that their wife/girlfriend should be more like the women who star in it?

I hate Twilight as much as the next person in here, but not because it's sick in any way, other than the fact that I find it sick to defile the name of vampires by making them sparkle. I hate it because it is a genuinely bad series. The characters are predictable and shallow, as is the plot. I greatly dislike Stephanie Meyer's writing style, but she has done an excellent job of marketing this garbage. On that point, I agree with you.
P.S. Not every twelve-year-old girl who reads this book is going to grow up wanting their lovers to draw blood. Only the select few that are SICK or have something DEEPLY WRONG with them are going to be S&M junkies, and most of them aren't going to be that way because Twilight somehow told them to.

Back on topic. I knew I couldn't like this book when preppy girls started to read it and get -obsessed- with it. I most closely agree with a post I'd seen in a demotivation poster: "Twilight -- A Teenage girl's conquest in which she attempts to choose between Necrophilia and Bestiality."

The start of each sentence begans with a capitalized letter. For example "you're = the contraction for you are", should be "You're = the contraction for you are. As in you're a self-righteous douche.", just so you know.
I think that if these books get kids reading again then there is no harm done. It's something kids will hopefully grow out of, so don't put Twilight down and her writings aren't awful, cheesy sure but she is a fine writer. I think you all just need to get a new hobby and find something other than innocent kids fantasies.... jerks.
Saying "at least the kids are reading" is like saying "Sure McDonald's is bad for you and has little nutritional value to offer, but at least it's food."
The issue with Twilight is the message it sends. Just one example of the message being that, when Edward leaves Bella in the second book, she repeatedly throws herself off a cliff, thinking it will bring him back to her. Which it does.
That's my problem with it. She portrays love as a sick obsession and Bella is a pathetic girl and a bad role model. Giving up because he left her??? That is not the message I would want to send to my children, nor do I think it's right. That was my main qualm with it really, I cannot stand pathetic female role models. The writing stressed me out (I read the series) I was reading them trying to figure out why on earth it was so popular. I've read better fanfiction which has more character and plot development
Why is it that people love to demonize something that is considered by some group uncool. Why do people give a damn? Harry Potter is just as bad and with more hype. . Harry Potter has plot. I read both of them and even now, I can enjoy reading Harry Potter. Rowling spend years working on the story, linking things together and I genuinely think she is a good writer. I legitimately think Meyer pulled Twilight out her backside. It would have been okay if she had developed the plot and not made Bella so pathetic. You are right though, regardless of our opinions, both of them are laughing on the way to the bank.

Sorry, how can you compare the two? Rowling's story is one that teaches great morals by creating a fantasy world in which we see reflected all the good and bad of the human condition. Twilight is a badly written novel for hormonal teenage girls who think being shiny is a whole new way to look at vampires.

I realize the cool thing these days is to bash twilight because it somehow intimidates young men, however by driving a stake through the book you simply are demonstrating that reading books is much more difficult for you than trying to fit in. If you had read the book you would have discovered that wooden stakes mean nothing to twilight vampires.
I find nothing of it intimidating. The fact that she refers to disco balls as vampires and thinks lycanthropes are synonymous to werewolves is why I can't stand the books. That mixed with the neoform's comments of "the awful writing skills of Stephanie Meyer"
