Why don't you assume they are following an imaginary line that is wrapped around the earth, that's why people at the exact opposite of Mecca on earth, can choose whatever direction they'd like... Try to imagine 3D...

if an internet campaign was started to rally people all over the world to stand in silence in one direction, you would go woah! thats awsome. But muslims have been praying towards one point for 1400+ years, no net needed. I say thats awsome and God is Awsome. Anyway.The direction for prayer is really meant for organisation purposes. Its not a gesture.

Trying to disprove a religious act using science is pointless. A prayer is an abstract concept, not a concrete, scientifically falsifiable one. Besides, it's not that their prayers actually reach Mecca, it's the act itself that counts.
I'm not certain how you could possibly be sure of this...

Directionality of prayer is not really a problem, according to our religion, as long as you intend on praying to God, you are praying to God. Oh and by the way, the direction we face is based on the angle in conjunction with the curvature of the Earth. As you already know, the world isn't flat (also, Muslims were one of the first people to say it wasn't flat) therefore the shortest distance between two spots is actually a curved line not a straight line. You should try walking east, because according to your picture, a person walking in a single constant direction will end up in space.
